The FIRST thing you drew, huh? No "One small step for man...", or "Mary had a little lamb..."
Good luck working your way up to better parts. Glad to hear the tablet was worth the aggravation and $, buh-bye mousy draw :3
Gummy bears captured the plasticy essence of the Wacom. Should have kept a few for vodka shots!

Speedo responds:

Well, the first COMPLETE drawing I did, did a bunch of dumb sketches beforehand

Looks like a kids dream city! Would you dare to color this someday?
Also like the background material. Is this ink on some kind of paper?

Butzbo responds:

I'm constantly thinking of ways to color this kind of drawings. Not too long ago I messed one up with acrylics, but that was the wrong kind of paper for that.
It is ink indeed, on some (kind of) rugose watercolor paper (although here i used a texture for a little more contrast, but it's not too different than the original paper).

I'm really liking these color studies! But more to the point: the proportions, level of detail throughout the piece and the poses you've done, really show some (improving) talent!
The mouth is a bit off, but the eyes are well composed, if a tad largish - good luck with the research.

kmau responds:

I'm glad you see it that way, I feel like I've learned alot more than usual from these 3 pieces.
Her eyes unintentionally got wider to accomodate the larger nose I think - but I feel they have the right size for this style. Her left eye is a little bit too big though. I really need to get into mouths again, I can barely draw lips.

Every time a see a piece of yours like this, I keep hoping you'll be illustrating the next book I read! Surely you've done some novels by now?

EchoCharlieDelta responds:

Not novels, no, but stay tuned as soon we'll be releasing a flash game with the creator of Intruder: Combat Training. I'm currently spending close to 8 hours a day making backgrounds/art assets for the game!

I like how the eyes and text balloons are all white (you may have missed one or two in the past :).
The layout, levels of detail and, of course, the well chosen words, really tickle my naughty bits!
Expressive and f-in funny!

JWBalsley responds:

Thanks again, yeah when I go back to print this later I need to fix up a lot of little mistakes. Thanks again for reading!

Expanding your cadre of critters? Curious cause for celebration! Not as detailed as some of your other family pictures, but I see a new, comfortable style emerging. Seems like you've changed gears and picked up some speed.

JWBalsley responds:

Thanks again, I also got my studio back again, I was living somewhere else for a year with no good place to get work done. I'm also enjoying coloring more lately, bright colors are fun! I also loosened up a bit lately and am getting tired of all the cross hatching every time. Thanks again!

My, such long arms, especially the one coyly touching her mouth! Love the subdued brown hues and style, the genuine of shyness. A very pretty and alluring Valentines day gift.
Are you dropping gift hints to your fans? Tsk, tsk, tsk... :3

sweetyluli responds:

Maaybbeee XD lol

Exceptional, just put some clop-clop noises in, and you got all the walk cycle you need!

Twisted4000 responds:

Ha ha, if she was walking I guess

Well, as you say this is just a test, but I think you did pretty good on your first digital "paint-by-numbers" outing. Your organic, emotive style may take a while to adapt to new methods (used a mouse to color?). The dark shading and colors in this lend themselves very well to depth and shape.
I think the gun (especially the clip) might turn some people off, as well as a lack of detail in the elbow/back spikes and boots. Good show!

JWBalsley responds:

Thanks for the good observations, I'm using a tablet and it still feels weird, I will probably buy a cintiq soon as those feel less like Mario Paint (a fun old game). I need to find some more "streaky" brushes as well.

Thanks again for the critique, it is always appreciated.

Your abilities as a bit writer and cartoonist are certainly something... ever think of applying for a job at SNL or another TV show?
Simple artwork, but has all the lighting, shading and details for a over the top score - again, well done!

ToonHole responds:

I've worked on some children's shows in Hollywood. I'd like to do more mature audience stuff so maybe someday I'll take your advice and land a sweet gig!
