Why is cognition even harder to get than listening?

Posted by VicariousE - July 17th, 2020

Yea so still in a poverty state, like a lot of other Americans who can't pay bills, waiting for the balloon to go up/hammer to fall/shit hitting the propellers.

Just came on to rant about something that happened, when my old cousin came over to run farm equipment here yesterday. "Vic, no one listens to you." he said sympathetically. 15 minutes later, he listened to me, then discounted what I said, even though I had tacit proof.

I dunno if I hate myself for proving him wrong, or I hate myself for taking literal food off my table for doing so. Maybe I hate that I was right, when it came to something so piddly.... and wrong about other things.

Spreading room temperature urine in the evenings/early night keeps deer and groundhogs away from produce fields. It's not pretty but it's sanitary, stinky but effective. Anyway, lost almost half the peppers to groundhog(s), and a good deal of tomato plant tops to deer, simply for not flinging stale pee around one night. You can't turn your back on nature, it abhors a vacuum... especially when the empty hole is in their stomach.

Maybe I'm upset, because my cousin isn't food insecure, has a family and girlfriend. Or it's that, his part time farming here is just a hobby, a tradition carried on from so many decades ago, when he was even younger than I am now.

Now that those animals have had a taste, can only wonder if my smell masking trick will work any more.

No guilty to be right.

Maybe, don't know for sure since I kinda gave up. If anything, mid-late summer is the time to be most vigilant. Those mindless grazing buggers likely ate anything good where they were, and are migrating over to where the outlier deer have been lurking

well, the good thing is that your advice was right, and that at least you manage to grow and to protect your own food, which is healthy and helps you in your daily needs.
as for your cousin, its his fault for not listening to your solid advice.
also a fence could've helped to repell those nocturnal invaders (deer +warthogs).

also hello, im chris, we used to talk many years ago, but we kinda lost touch after a while.
let me know if you wanna talk sometime.
be well, man!

Didn't anything other than a few cherry tomatoes, the rest my cousin took away or I traded for stale pizza. Sry it's been a long time since I kept up dialog here Chris, been dark times.

If he was even half the man he should be, he should be apologizing to you.

Also, I hear deer meat is delicious when fresh-hunted and roasted.

Shame my ammo lock box is right next to hostile tenants, who are looking for any excuse to call the cops on me. Bad enough they trespass over here, just sick of it

@Yomuchan @VicariousE Trespassers, huh? Got any castle law equivalent on your side?

Not unless there was something expensive like meat or soybeans out there to defend, but an acre of land around here goes for 100-200k, and suv ruts are a pain to fix

That's some impressive rows though, puts our amateur summer patches to shame... but fences, would they work at keeping all them unwanted visitors away? Too expensive? We only really have to worry about rabbits though, chicken wire's just enough for them. Plus submerged buckets for those vicious voles. I feel like maybe I already mentioned all of this some years back though...

Didn't realize you were back on a farm though! Have you been all this time?

Same farm, new owners, and poverty stricken me on it lol. Tried to find a place near NG HQ for a month, then waited another month for the new owners to come up a rental agreement so I could move back in.

Nah, deer jump over the fence or around it, other than fencing it all in, gotta make it smell unappealing all the time. Garlic/rotten egg whites spray works the best but to buy the mix or make it myself, couldn't afford it.

Ahh still the same place too, then probably still facing a lot of those same problems huh, still hard to get Internet there? New solutions on that?

Hmm, potential ideas: thorny branches/such around the plants? Motion-activated sprinkler/lights/sound-based thing, whatever's cheaper? Coffee grounds, though maybe requires excessive amounts to have an effect? If no fence maybe softer nets they wouldn't want to tangle themselves into? Just brainstormin' here...

Coffee grounds wouldn't be a problem, could likely sweet talk/pay off the local chains into using a special wastebasket to dump grinds. Considering how greedy those beans are on the soil, might be a thing... dunno how much anti-deer properties linger in the smell, but likely great for cellulose/biomass

Deer dont care about sharp weeds, fur protects them, and preens em too. Nets and cages don't help, they'll wear em around like a fashion statement. Believe me, hunger/necessity is the best brainstorm: human piss, cooled and spread on the plant after sundown cheapest solution, aside from egg whites, water and garlic spray.

Haven't paid for street gas, electric or telecom since very early this year - former Goldman Sachs CEO and current governor's 'emergency' exec orders have been halting evictions, collections and other things for many months now. Guess he figures the Democratic party will strong-arm the national gov't into... something. Don't care for kickbacks, it's kicking the can down the road. Gonna be hell on Earth when the bills come due, for ppl and the institutions who've leaned on the ebil banksters

Ah that'd be a solid idea then. Long as there's no second-hand market for that kind of stuff, it has plenty of uses in keeping pests and unwanted plants at bay too so maybe they'll eventually start making use of that stuff if they haven't already. Did a quick Google on things that might keep deer away earlier and that came up as an option. Lesser known downside though: not good for earthworms. Not sure how big a deal that'd be though; if they really go for that stuff even though it's dangerous for them or avoid it as long as it's not all mixed in with the dirt...

Damn man. :/ Deers are wilder than I thought. If human piss works though maybe no need to seek alternative solutions? Should be great for the plants too. Interesting how it'd the most natural thing. Territorial marking.

Hmm, sounds like you're just waiting on a shitstorm though. Maybe potential to work some kind of transportation gig to get the economy moving? Was thinking when this all started how there's bound to be a way bigger necessity for transport now, both items and persons, some unofficial hygienic taxi thing, maybe shopping for people who don't want to leave their homes...

Was the main telecom problem before not being able to pay for it? Thought coverage was a thing too earlier?

Without good worms, soil becomes useless, need something to keep the bacteria jumping. There's a white worm out there that's no good for soil, hope it doesn't spread.

In a rough spot w/ my truck and being on the road legally, otherwise, I'd be doing ok now, shame the lockdown didn't happen late last year, coulda kept up w/ the bills easier. Food delivery really took off... the tips make up for getting around 5$/hr to be on call.

Tried a few times to negotiate less service for a cheaper price, and each time I get the quoted price for a month, then the monthly rate went right back up again. Then they told me I'd have to mail back their networking junk, and they'd send me something cheaper (DLS) to get even less service... but the rental rate for that gear is about the same as the fiber optic. Reee

Bitch work fuckin SALLY
try tillen again

Not giving up on farming, just giving up on farming around here... someone needs to invent an alka-seltzer tablet that deer would eat. There's 2 dead deer on the sides of the road within a mile of my house, likely still there, guess they didn't like being SUV hood ornaments

Yeah of course, just wasn't sure if the worms eat coffee grounds if they can avoid them, though reading up it seems it's only a 100% coffee ground diet that's really fatal, shouldn't have any side-effects when there's plenty of other food then (random linkage, probably more comprehensive sources out there): https://wormfarmguru.com/worms-eat-coffee-grounds/

Actually been avoiding throwing coffee into the garden the last year or so since I read that coffee ground worm killer report. Can't trust the media...

The potato kind of white worm? No fun with those, though you probably have way more alternative types over there.

Problems with truck or license/health? That's a bummer, world does expand so much when you have wheels... didn't have my own car before this but had to get one to get by without commuting now. So far so good. Would biking be an idea? A lot of bike taxi/transport starting up around here too, but of course not so useful outside the city.

Hmm, so what are you running right now? DLS?

Ah what happen? Things even worse off? Final call on rent and stuff? :/

it's been 8 years since my pop passed away, and the estate still hasn't been closed. add to that the rental house is still in limbo, as the tenants are now squatting, and I can't take custody of, or sell said house, meanwhile, i'm dying of malnutrition

i'll make a new post soon :/

Will there be a 2020 doomsday post like there was in other election years (2012 and 2016).
This year is more apt, than ever. And some say the lamestream media and acadummies translated the Mayan clocks 8 years too soon

8 years too soon might be accurate, sure would appreciate a link or source. Lord knows I spent most of my life trying to suppress the info.

As far as a cautionary post further elucidating and clarifying my recollections of that one night just over 40 years ago... yea probably. Just sucks on a scale outside of modern understanding

hi @Cyberdevil

@S3C If any year did seem more suitable for a doomsday yeah...

I've been finding some small comfort in the company of ppl my age via twitch and discord, and some of them are hip to the distortion of facts. Like, that Antarctica is just a mess waiting to break apart, and not a true continent... that's a fact repeated by earnest and upstanding ppl I've met many years ago. Sucks tho, Trump's gonna get hit before he even finishes his term (or begins a new one) - likely due to what he might say as a civvie

How do you think we'll fare when Antarctica does break apart and disappear though? Tropical island max exodus such a shame... would've liked to take some trips to places like Tuvalu or Bermuda before such things come to be. Potentially speed up the process with additional emissions. Climate change is most definitely a thing but as for if we actually have an impact on it or if it'd be the same thing regardless hmm... feels like microplastics in our air and water are a bigger problem. The battery acid and radioactive waste we're fertilizing the land with. Pesticides. All our overpopulation poison.

Anyway it's cool to hear you've found a haven somewhere! Discord's cool in how enclosed it is. Freedom among the like-minded. I suppose I just don't find as much meaning in doing anything behind closed doors unless there's really a plan for action...

That much mass won't disappear, it will likely bob around and recoalesce once the mini ice age starts.

Discord and Newgrounds share much in common, both are minor players in the mass media/mass social networking sites. If that means we're operating behind closed doors, good, means less nation-state oversight and more freedom.

Mmm, optimistic. :) I hope so. Don't much look forward to the prospect of a miniature ice age either but better than a flooded everything...

True. Guess I'm still just fixated on numbers really. Discord gives me no way to collect those, no matter how inspiration conversations the place may lead me too otherwise. Also all the more endless pagination; difficulty finding things you want if you're not just partaking in the present stream of discussion.

I guess there's some really fundamental differences too with regard to the whole content-based contribution system here, user pages, all such things; whereas Discord is mainly a chat/stream of material no matter who makes it. Different mindset required!

Took me a while to warm up to Discord (even longer with Steam), but, you go where the action is

inspiration conversations the place may lead me too... pardon that. Opting for ultimate transparency and thus affirmation to my errs instead of deleting/reporting said wonky grammatical mishaps. Also fascinating visuals on the UNIDISC, finna watchlist...

Being too transparent leads to selflessness, invisibility, always a risk of being ignored and not counted as genuine in resolve.

Been having some great times in gta:o racing, discord and twitch, made good friends, heard fascinating stories.. though the older they are, the more I hear the same ones, just like real life

Mmm, never considered that side to it, always saw transparency as inherently good, a sign of self-recognition and respect, a sign that you've come to (or at least try to) come to terms with yourself, not that you don't have anything to hide but that you're open with what matters, honest and true... then again that's not all real transparency is it hmm..

Sounds like good times. :) I have a hard time getting into multiplayer games too though. No end. I like things that do.

The non transparent have a distinct advantage, also less honor, but more $$

Yea I'm not into many forms of online PvP stuff either, but there's an appeal to 'competitive' racing. iRacing costs a bundle but ppl still go for it, because it's well maintained and moderated, also some good anti-lag mitigation.. the regulars call the laggers 'blinkers', when it's too much latency

Yupp, sad truth is that it pays to be ruthless. Better poor and honorable than vice versa though. Seems lacking the ability to empathize is almost a requirement of reaaally getting to the highest reaches of society, but maybe not so, maybe the ones at the top are just so far distanced from reality that they don't connect, maybe psychos can only get so far too, some just have incredible work ethics/minds for business...

iRacing hmm, first time I hear of that one! Sounded like it might've been an Apple thing. Something you're into too?

Can definitely see myself getting into multiplayer racing if I decided to but... time and stuff. IDK. I hesitate. Would rather stick to finite, story-based, single player games with the little time I have to spare on those, sad as that may sound. Racing do be fun though! The rare times I get together with my nephew we plan tons of splitscreen. Dirt/Colin McRae on his computer, Trackmania on mine. Moving through editions there as time goes.

No way could I afford iRacing or a wheel/pedal setup, but it's fun to watch.

Ah nice, gotta watch out for little relatives, they can get some good laptimes in. (One of my buddies let his nephew do an iRacing track while his other buddy was trying to hot lap the same track... managed to fool 2nd said buddy into thinking the kid beat his lap time! Now that was entertainment >:)

*Better poor and honorable than vice versa though

...I say that, but same time I think I'm still thinking: I can be the exception. Anyone can. With enough willpower and wit there's no stopping your aspirations.

Poor ppl usually end up in jail or on the street, reee.

The little peoples aspirations are the fat cat's perspirations, and dealt w/ by lawyers and dirty tricksters

what's good Vic

dunno, goodness I guess
