Broadband companies always behave like that, it's the same everywhere. They are like vultures, charge your money as much as possible, but with little return on service. There are a recent shocking thing these companies do recently, such as freely banning on those they suspect committing digital piracy. Worse, they snoop the customers' information publicly. I mean like we all know NSA and FBI have been doing it for ages, but only in the shadow.
I do feel ashamed for what I did in the past, such as involving in surveillance works for several governments. I even involved in a major project, a smart surveillance system for CCTV network. I have to come clean after witnessing their unethical way of spying on citizens. Infraguard is just the tip of the iceberg.
I believe you heard of Echelon? As far as I know (and base on my knowledge), this scary system is still running and NSA is upgrading it. Now, Echelon is a true work of terror.
The tenant next door has graciously allowed me access to her wireless hub... over 300 feet away on a wireless g connection. She's got Verizon, which seems the least nasty of the providers... how can they know what torrents I'm getting? Either way, yeah, I have to be careful now. :\ don't really want to talk about my brush with the FBI, even though I was completely and utterly well within my rights, to freely assemble with others! Well, they have to appear to play ball with the movie and music industry... besides, they don't want to waste money on cooling towers and unnecessary bandwidth, I imagine. Cutting off their customers isn't good business, but I'm sure they will.

I pirate movies regularly. I have been getting hard drives to store many downloaded movies. I think the last ones I pirated was some episodes of Game of Thrones. My girlfriend has paid for HBO service in order for us to watch products legitimately. Problem is the quality is bad and we constanly encounter problems. So I said screw it, cancel the service and went to download everything we like!
Well, my point is, if the vendors' service has been better, the users would even spend money on the product. Again, like you said previously, big businesses care less about their customers.
The cable service quality was that bad? What a tangled web they weave.... maybe Netflix or ... that other TV show service. Both are quite cheap and are of good quality.
I live on the East Coast, where they take great pains to make sure we're nice and docile. Just look at the NY stock exchange: they hide behind roadblocks, an American flag and automatic weapons. In DC, they have urban slums from which to fight, in case the sheep decide to stampede. Canada looks very appealing just now... but even they are aware of the writing on the wall - immigration is tight about now.
