The best anime ever

Posted by VicariousE - October 26th, 2011

Which one is it? I've seen three: "Panty and Stocking" (like), "Vandread" (like), and "Gurren Lagann" (wtf, more robots?). So two out of three ain't bad, but what else is out there? I don't mind reading subtitles, but a change would be nice.
Best japanime movie I've seen, was a very long time ago. "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" was done in the early 1980's and features many elements we take for granted today. The movie also featured a chocobo and a pikachu. But an anime series....?
Any suggestions (that don't involve hatin' or penis jokes)?

Pic: Kelly's Heroes - Late Sixties WWII "caper" flick; plot too similar to "Three Kings"

10.27.11 - Thanks to the venerable user Viper50, if off to discover the post-apocalyptic wonders of Cowboy Bebop for the first time. Guess it's torrents time (uugh)! Stagevu's good for movies and little stuff, but you gotta read the reviews for quality info.
11.6.11 - Very appreciative for the all the suggestions! Now if I can make some room on my HD's... All the years working on these things (for little or no money), and all I've got is a pile of 4 gb or smaller hard drives.

THAT is some laundry list, thanks! In order of awesomeness? Guess I'm up to find out - it's either this or the news....

well id say cowboy bebop is one of the if not the best ones on the list
then i after the Full Metal Alchemists and Bleach its really in no particular order
but they are all pretty good

Helpful again, thanks. Wish I could help w/ your gas furnace, but any advice I'd give would likely blow up your house. NE homes still have plenty of old oil burners... keeps the oil futures' assholes in money when the rest of us are freezing.

yeah it would be bad if the house blew up...
well my dad was planning on getting a new furnace
so i guess ill be somewhat cold til then

I can't watch anime anymore. Most of their stories are just like the aptly named, LOST. They build up character tension and story well enough, but then they end with the audience hanging on a severely disappointing ending.

This is one of the reasons I actually prefer DBZ to other animes which purportedly tout 'good stories'. Sure DBZ is just a show about yelling and punching, but they KNOW that's exactly what it's about.

So you're into anime, these newsposts keep on surprising! :) In case this is still relevant, Grave of the Fireflies was a great anime movie, the beautiful/tragic kind. If you're into fighting, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi is great, and though it's insanely exagerated they do teach you plenty of techniques through the course of the series. Also Air Master, the only anime I've seen so far that really manages to capture the flow of a fight. As for Vipers list, Samurai Champloo is definitely my favorite there. Did you ever manage to plow through all of those?

Oh sure, but they (anime movies) were few and far between on cable in the 1980's. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind really blew my mind! Can't find the version with all the celebrity voices online though :|
Did I burn through Vipers list? Shit, no, but Cowboy Bebop was a monumental treat though! There are so many genres of anime out there... I liked Vandread, which is a hard plot to explain quickly, but is very easy to absorb and understand... it's classified ecchi sci-fi i think....

Have you seen Cyborg 9? I found an old VHS of that series from the 80s, though it was (as I suspect most internationally released anime was back then).. dubbed. O_o It's probably just a matter of getting used to though. As for Vandread, I haven't seen that one yet, will add that to my watch list. Speaking of lists: http://cyberd.org/anime-list.html

If you're into sci-fi then Ghost in the Shell is another classic.
