Aha, new tidbit of untranslatable knowing attained!

Lot of night time driving lately? Man hope you get through the sinus thing, seems sinister. I'm looking for that piece of land too, though probably more like: concrete cubicle suspended in air amidst many similarly-designed confinements. AKA apartments... you're looking for a new farm though? A little house out in the hills somewhere?

Just looking for farmable land, I can always make something cheap to live in. Ideally, I'd like to be close to a gas line for heat and cooking, the bigger concern is doable internet.

Oh hey, building your own house! :D That'd be pretty neat. Thoughts on Internet via satellite? Doesn't seem like the cheapest option, but sounds like it should have pretty good coverage pretty much anywhere.

I doubt satellite internet's progressed very far, latency might be so bad I couldn't use secure websites or even game online. If I had planned to move up into the mountains, maybe those systems would work quicker.

I've done every aspect of home building, figure why not just do it myself (subject to local and state laws, variance, permits, fees and legal paperwork). I've got a few expensive and rare books on pretty much every way someone could build their own wood-based home.

Hmm, I thought those orbiting metal devices would be far superior in all areas... turns out they really aren't so great. Reading up on it now: latency's apparently ca 1,000 to 2,000 ms, max speed no higher than ca 20 mbps, and price still not considerably competitive... if you're in a decent area. Good to know.

Great know-how to have fo shizzle. Crafting your own architectural castle is the DREAM. In a nice, quiet, moderately isolated spot somewhere in the still somewhat unexploited wilds of the world...

...yet close enough to: pavement, hospital, airport, grocery store. I don't mind straight runs of an hour or so, but past that, yea, might be too wild for comfort. Problem is, most of the bast lands for growing food, are already full of suburban houses or corporate owned farms.

I wouldn't mind too much if they suddenly decide to rid the world of all pavements, but apart from that: exactly. :) Yeah, it's the same here, pretty sad to see all good form land getting eaten by an endless array of building blocks, cubicle plots and surrounding road... pretty heavy pressure on all farmers living near civilization too, there's bound to be a lot of value in their land, and little profit in NOT selling.

It was the proximity to paved roads I was referring to, might be I find a lot/parcel of land that has a right-of-way, but no pavement.. or dirt path to it. In certain states, if you're the only person on a county road, they might charge you for reasonable upkeep.

Yeah progress likes to gnaw on the hand that feeds it alright, it's a shame the fingers are little more than stubs and the infection's well under way

Huh, real disadvantage of living out in the country there... the taxes takes care of all public roads here, but if all surrounding land is your own it'll most likely be a private road; upkeep's up to you. No responsibility though.

Mmm. Word.
