Yeah, my sis very nearly became a nutritionist, but pussed out for a Liberal Arts degree. Didn't matter, she still kicked ass before the CFS and MS kicked in (thanks to her overworking and being near the CFS epicenter when it hit the scene in 1990). 'Eat a green thing every day' is the minimal amount of advice anyone should heed.

For the US, pretty far. South America will get a quick shallow blast (bad enough), but as the inertia travels deeper on it's trek North... depends on elevation and how much resistance there is (more like mountains, and not homes and jelly-like topsoil) - I believe the worst of the wave, may bypass much of the of South America's NE, hence the (future medias) initial perception, that the wave died out.
Even afterwards, like a stone in a small pond, there will be "bounce back" waves. I wouldn't want to eat seafood after this - you may want to go crab fishing while you still can. The waters will be saltier, dirtier and more toxic than we could've done. Probably a little hot too - there are at least two nuclear subs down there and a few decades of refuse in the North Atlantic (there's a sweet spot out there that just sits, and doesn't impact shorelines.
When this is over, we'll really know how much fucking oil that New Orleans rig let loose. I bet it spread around to Georgia's coastline, it was so bad - why else would they spray and dump an "oil to crumpled rock" chemical so close to shore? As a barrier for sea bottom currents :|
