The old one, through them cost 50$ :| 7 years ago - it's amazing it lasted this long.
Old remote will work too, I hope. New smartcard will be installed in the new box, and he'll get billed 15$ for it. They wanted to charge 7$ per month, so if it fries again, he won't have to pay O__O
