Happy New Year, Frozen Avenues and High Tech Hijinks

Posted by VicariousE - January 8th, 2015

First off, I'd like to thank all those who've fanned me.  I know it's fashionable to make posts saying "100 Subs :3" and such, but to me, 178 of you out there have done me a great honor by including me into your feed.  I'm going to eventually get my Vault 101 newspost figured out and organized well - I still can't figure out how to make a link!  Wait... Vault 101 Ooooh :|

Following up my last news post, I'm still living on my dead parent's farm, the prospective buyers requested an extentsion, which expired this past Friday, and I've heard -nothing- since, so the deal may be completely blown.  It's expensive to live here, and I wasted plenty of dough getting ready to move to a cheap dive to figure out what kind of farm I could buy, after the sale went down and the check cleared....  Absolute waste of time and money so far.  And my poor sister, who's been handling this, has been mortally diminished by the process.

Sooo, while I wait for those with more than me, I've got some things planned in the interim...  I bought parts to a new PC, which was assembled by a homeless guy  (he was over for his brithday yesterday; January 7th, 1955).  Only problem is, the neighbor pays for my labor and materials by giving me access to her WiFi, and so far the only thing that's worked, is reflecting the signal from my upstairs window, onto a 13 year old turd with a broken monitor.  Why?  It's the only computer radio I've been able to manually tweak for latency and distance, as the signal comes from over 300 feet away...

Lately I've been having problems even connecting to the internet at all.  A lot of the neighbors are on channel 11, so there's lot's of noise.  I guess I'll keep buying (and returning) off the shelf, until I can find something I can use.  It's likely I'll have to make a cantenna of some sort, blah...  It's like when someone becomes a pot head, they go through a bong buiding phase :\  Eh, at least I have a few tripods, one of which could be used to aim the waveguide antenna.

Here's a pic of some of the vermin, who have me in their thrall.  I think the black one in this picture was the last one to get hit and killed by a car, on Boxing Day no less... recently it had been traveling to a neighbor's house, to get some of the weed smoke vented from this one kids window; used to roll around and meow a lot, apparently.  Late summer last year, the cat used to try and pick pumpkins with me in the field.... nah, that ain't the cat in the pic, that's the other one :\

"Corsair Hydro Series H80i High Performance Water/Liquid CPU" Water cooling? really? oh man i am so jelly now!

Interesting page, the hard part will be finding that one perfect can.

You are definitively a cat la... i mean... a cat... na, nothing comes to mind that can save this comment XD, a cat lad?.

Even by pressing F5, the most CPU activity I've gotten so far, is well below 50% It seems to work great, and has a low, but tenacious hum about it, very quiet. Only thing I do not care for, is the glowing Corsair name and boat over the processor.

There's a 'formula' for diameter with regard to the stub/antenna in the can/tube...
I returned the router and got a dongle :| Best Buy doesn't even sell WiFi cards for a PC, however, the thingy I got seems to work as well as the 13 y/o laptop's wireless G. Still need to stick it in a tube though... so much for a decade of technological advances - only the prices have gone up.

Cat lad lol?! Nah, just a crazy person that tolerates vermin, aka cats.

Your CPU is now superior to the Battlestar's.

Congrats!

My CPU is a neural net processor, a learning machine... oh wait, that's the mobo. Or a weird speed metal band that likes to sample Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Thanks, O bringer of Flash, just need to throw some tests at it, like: a video game made within the past year or two, benchmark test (hmm, wassa good one these days?)

I'd really love to get back to borrowing movies from the library, and using an old program to shrink and rip them to DVD - that was the one thing that took the most CPU cycles. Do I need to do that now? No! I gots a BluRay burner, which surely means I can buy some blank, dual layer DVD's, or even put a few movies on a BR disc. Amazing super science, sorcery and savagery >:) if I may quote Thundarr the Barbarian

so what do you got in stock for Vault 101??

There's another post I made that has lots of rare and valuable info as well, so.. I'll have to straighten up what's already in 101, and add (cut n paste) the stuff from the other post. The real question is, how to make it accessible and easy to navigate. Guess I'll need to make an numbered outline from A to Z, and hope I can shoehorn in anything that comes afterwards.

Is that your shoe on the bottom right corner?

Yeah, I think it's a Reebok. Those cats love to mob me, even before I can get myself out the door! That black and white male (on his back) is something... he likes to pounce on the screen door, like a bear trying to get inside a car, or shaking a tree. Wonder where he learned that?

Come on man you upgraded to water cooling and yet you can't get a descent wireless card?

The problem is, the computer's back end isn't facing the window, where the signal comes in. What really floored me: Best Buy doesn't seem to like things that fit inside PC's, like wifi cards O_O

So, I returned the balls out wireless router, which didn't want to receive internet over-air, and got this, which seems to function about as well as my wireless G/tinfoil configuration.

The beamforming thing seems to work well, after it's had a chance to sample the landscape. Just sucks there's nothing I can do to turn the thing on or off (software), other than to literally pull the plug |:

OMG, look at all the kittehs!! :3

My stray won't let me pet him yet. :'(

I've been told I could be the next 'cat whisperer' O_o It shouldn't take too much longer... if the stray isn't too old, you could use a long weed or something to play with it. Just face the critter head on and drag the weed around in front of it, don't try petting it, just amuse the thing, talk to it a bit.

Feral cats can't handle looking at a whole human being, so use your fist as a sorta fake cat head. Let it sniff it, and one day, it'll sniff then bonk your hand, like it was another cat's. It takes time.

Oh a USB wireless adapter those usually work well.
It depends of the software that the USB came with, but talking hardware my mom has one of those and after a few minutes it heats up like a microwave, is yours doing the same?

I had a Wifi USB that heated up quite a bit, but most of the one I used in the past were quite inadequate for my purposes.

The new AC/N/G/B/A Wifi thingy seems to work well, but it's very delicate, very feisty, relies on PC software quite a bit. It's sensitive to the point where any fluctuation in signal makes it go all panicky... but it does reel in the signal.

Must be the distance.

Yes - Long Distance Runaround

Latency issues... typical, since I was born, kinda post-mature.

property selling/buying shenanigans are a huge pain in the ass. But the cat on his back looks like a more house cat version of this monster we took in last year..

Mine's almost a year old. If I brought it into the house. it wouldn't be a cat anymore, at least to me. Once those things get easy, inside living, they change... kinda like humans do; get all fat and bloated, sleeping irregularly due to lack of sunlight and activity

since we live in the fucking boonies (as a friend put it) our cats like to outside and kill the pests. never had a rat/snake problem so they do their job well. the monster's not even 8 months, apparently his mom was one of those hyprid wildcat mixes so we have this weirdo who's the size of a fullgrown cat and not even a year.

The farm I'm on used to be called the boonies, but cyburbia is all around me now, McMansions all around me, except for across the street and along one side. I'm close enough to the road.. it's been a problem. Crossing the road is a steep learning curve, some of these cats can't hack. I was given a mole for Christmas, but when I went outside to get it, the little buggers took it back. Found a stray male cat spraying the outside of the barn a few hours ago |:

I'd rather be pet free TBH, I only like to run to the store for humans, ya know? But a few outside cats are okay with me, this way one gets eaten or squished, there's at least one backup pet...

Happy new year to you as well! May the Obelix be with you x)

Thanks man, I wonder if I could handle an Obelix as a erstwhile sidekick. Probably a lot of sidekicking and punching involved. Doesn't really go down well in a modern Western environment... especially when the state of healthcare is dubious at best.

I love cats

Cats love me more than I love them. Those hairy beggars sure got my number :|

Good thing you don't love them as much as this dude does

Funny yet disturbing at the same time. Also a good summation of my life in teh 21st century lulz
I guess every generation and genre of music likes to play up the subtext/inferred angles, sometimes all in one song. http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/460854

Top quality kitties right there.

They are, should really find them homes, but IDK how'd they do after they get put in a cage, fixed, then sent to live in a box, when they're all outside farm cats?

dude wtf are you hacking newgrounds?? careful about posting command prompt screens on the internet, you make get taken away by the NSA (and never heard from again)

who cares if Milla Jovovich has no tits...name me a single actress with prettier eyes...she could have a penis and I would still be attracted to 'her' (no homo, not attracted to the penis, I mean it would be a turnoff, but she has more than enough beauty all-around to make up for any hypothetical male genitalia...ya feel me lol...)

Nothing too revealing in that pic, right? Bleh, let um take me away, ha ha.

Eyes and the personality for me.

Look what JordanD submitted to the portal right after our conversation about Singularities O.O

Squeaky wheel gets the grease maybe? I think I wished him a happy new year, and where's the new content? on his blog around that time. Thanks for the heads up, mighta missed it :)

Nice kitties. I have 5 cats lol.

Thanks, though I wish they wouldn't hang around me so... I've got an old one in the house too |: However, I'm gonna make the switch to those pine pellet things, so my allergies aren't being fed so much (clumping clay dust).

I have an oldie as well. 15 years, and still going strong!

That's about how old the interior cat is. We once had houseguests who kept 2 big dogs outside, so she got scared, and has been inside ever since. Shame she doesn't wanna associate with the outside cats, unfixed as they are...

It's been just over 2 years since my Pop, the real cat man, passed away, and I'd really like to get rid of most of them, and keep just a few, fixed outside cats to keep the mice down. Inside cats aren't really cats, just furry dependents who think they're human |:
